Ash Ketchum Isshu Jacket by moonymonster Ash Ketchum Isshu Jacket by moonymonster
I know Isshu has a new English name now for some reason, but I can't remember what it is and I don't feel like looking it up.

Anyway, here is the Ash Ketchum Isshu jacket that I made by myself (except that I made it in my sewing class, so I made it by myself with my teacher, and drove her completely mad). And oh my god curves. After this jacket I'm officially the curved seam and flatfell seam QUEEN. Seriously. Ash's mom is insane for designing something like this. (And no one BUT her would dress him in something like this.)

Also, three different people who'd never seen his costume before or knew he'd switched them asked me if it was a Pokemon costume during its construction, because it 'looked Pokemon'. I thought that was rather funny, actually.

Also also, NEVER EVER USE COTTON WITH A PATTERN DESIGNED FOR FLEECE. You will get headaches, you will stare at the pattern in bafflement, and you will wonder whatever possessed you to make a jacket with inset sleeves, a centered zipper, ribbing, a bloody hood, different colored panels, pockets, AND BLOODY BLACK SQUIGGLY LINE THINGS.

Delia Ketchum, if I ever meet you in a dark alley, we will have words.

Note 7/26/12: I am not currently taking commissions on this jacket. If you have ideas for other costumes, you can contact me.

I do, but I request that I don't have a time limit on them. I'm in school full time and find it difficult to make any deadlines but my classes XD But I can make this for you.

I'm not taking commissions anymore right now, sorry. But if I ever did, it would be between 100-150 dollars, because I'll be including materials, travel, and paying myself per hour for it.

Thank you ^^ I don't remember the pattern. You'll just have to go looking XD And be prepared to alter it of course. There are no patterns that come with curved separate panels like Ash's.

Thanks, replying. I do wonder which ash ketchum outfit would be easy to do since I do wanna cosplay ash on the 3rd day of the con.

I can't answer that because I don't know your sewing skills or when your con is. There are also many versions of Ash beyond the classic outfits. Go on Bulbapedia and look up some of his other outfits--for example, I'm wearing his vacation outfit to ALA this year. Some of them can be made very easily, like the work-out outfits.

I've heard Hoenn is relatively easy because you can alter an existing hoodie--I met a cosplayer that took two hoodies, cut them up, and stitched them back together--which is always good for a newbie, and like I said checking out the alternate outfits is a good idea too. This jacket is actually one of the more complicated ones ^^; I suppose you could do the same thing with cutting one up and sewing it to another one, but it's up to you. Classic is something people always like, and depending on how you approach it you might be able to do that too. I don't know if you're any good at putting in sleeves, and all of these costumes except Sinnoh require sleeves. You're not actually telling me anything. (However, like I said, I saw someone do a Hoenn jacket by making it a vest and wearing a black t-shirt under it.)

Honestly? Find a pattern you think you can do, find an Ash costume that fits it. He's got 20-30 alternate costumes at this point, along with the first main 4 that you always see at cons. I personally wouldn't recommend doing a first season costume because EVERYONE does first season--if you're going to do first season, find a way to make it different, like the Rule 63 I met at ALA last year that wandered around with a sign that said 'Misty Made Me Do This'. It's hard to make classic Ash stand out. That's why the next generations and the alternate outfits are more fun ^^

I wanna know the pattern you use so I can use it to make the cosplay. :)

And I will def use fleece since it will be cold at the con I am going too.

Why don't you note me? I don't mind doing commissions for people, but it depends on the project and difficulty ^^ But I don't mind at least discussing it. ^^ This jacket specifically was a real pain to do...

Hehe, all right, but you'll have to give me your measurements and a lot of time. I'm very busy this semester and probably wouldn't be able to get started til summer. Also, I'd be charging you materials plus time, so the jacket would be between fifty to seventy dollars ^^; This piece is complicated and took me about 24 hours total to make.

Haha, thanks. If you really want a commission, I'd need a lot of time to make it--next semester I'm taking Intermediate Sewing, and that's supposed to be a pretty difficult class. But since I kinda know the ropes on how to make it now, it wouldn't be so evil...'cept the sleeves. The sleeves were a pure pain in the ass to pin. Next time I'm getting a pattern that's designed for cotton, or buying fleece...-_-

Intermediate sewing sounds hard :/ but you already seem good, so you should be fine.

Yeah, the only thing that's going to be hard about it is my teacher. I know her already pretty well since I took her Intermediate course as a construction lab for the past two semesters, but she's heavy on the samples and heavy on the courseload....going from beginning sewing to intermediate's basically like going from first grade to twelfth.

And I have no idea how much I'd charge XD This little monster took me about five, six weeks to do--though I did that at one class a shot more or less, so that was about three or four hours a week. Ended up finishing it up just in the nick of time...so now that I have EXP points, I could probably cut the time down. The only thing that would bother me about doing it again would be the bloody sleeves. I was pretty much fine except pinning those sleeves...arrrgh easing is not my friend. Yeah, finding a different pattern next time. Or using one they actually, y'know, designed the pattern for...Moony is AWESOME like that.

So...I dunno...probably materials plus time, or some sort of base fee? I'd need to know how much is in your price range, and then consider that against how much effort I think this would take. (I do try to shop cheap, though. Always go when there are sales and all that...and I've been trying to raid the Fashion District for a while now >< They sell fabric there for like a couple bucks a yard, and that's if you DON'T bother to bargain!)

:iconfoxzomgplz: That's a pretty big jump.

:iconfoxwhaplz: Hmm~ I would want to pay you any less then 30 for it, but I don't wanna pay any higher then 50 >.<
The final price can be up to you and how much you hate those sleeves.

8o I guessing you bargain then.

Some of my friends and my teachers do. I'm terrible at it so I don't bother.

If I can get the materials for cheap, then that would probably be reasonable...just so long as you know this is not going to be on my priority list ^^; I'd probably work on it in my spare time during the semester, and do serious work on it during the summer. Just because I always have to put school first. It's why my friends get frustrated at me when they ask me to make them stuff during the school year...it usually doesn't happen, unless I can make it during one of my classes. (This jacket squeezed by because it was my final project. I'm tricky like that XD)

However, that does give me time to wait for the big sales to buy your materials, which'll cut your materials fee down. And that fee seems all right...I'll keep you posted on materials first, and then we'll discuss time and all that. (I know I keep going on materials, but I remember one time when my friend didn't wait for a sale and spent fifty bucks on materials, returned it all, waited for a big sale, and spent about twenty. Difference there is.)

Anyway, how about I just keep my eye out for sales on patterns and such, tell you what the costs are, and if you think it's worth it I'll start work? I'll also need your chest measurements--around the bust and under the arms. This'll be guy measurements, which are very forgiving, but I still need the chest to know what size to buy the pattern and fabric for. It also will go with comfort level...like, if you want it to be really baggy, or if you want it to fit you a little better. Either way it won't be form-fitting, because it's designed for box-shaped bodies and not curved-shaped bodies, but it's up to you.

(Hah. You can tell I'm familiar with making boys' clothes, can't you? I need to start making stuff for girls...)

Or course school comes first! :( I don't want you to fail just because your being nice to me.
:3 I'm not in any rush to get it so don't worry about time and if it does mean it will save money that's even better! ($30 difference O.O that's pretty big)

MEASUREMENTS! >.< I forgot about them (why can't you read minds?)
^^; I will take me abit of time to get them. I don't have the right tape-measure at my house so I will need to track one down.
I'm pretty big in size ^^ so I look forward to the male measurements forgiving me.
8D I like my clothes baggy, if I can avoid it I don't wear stuff made for females.

:3 If your going into the world intermediate sewing, I Imagen it would be a good idea to do more girls clothes. Don't why but I see them being harder to do.

All right...then I definitely need the under-arm measurements. Basically stick the measuring tape under your arms, and pull it slightly tight (like people do when they measure your bra size). Bust measurements too, though, so I can do the math right (especially since you're using centimeters instead of inches, and I'll have to convert them and make sure it's right XD None of our patterns come in centimeters.)

Actually, my required clothing is apparently some form of pants, a collared blouse, and something made out of knits. If I can figure out how I'm going to try to make Dawn's skirt in class...skirts are much easier than pants, but if I can get a good grade for it so much the better :3

XD Awesome. And I'm going to finish off Kaoru's shoes after finals...I'm almost done with Ash's now, and I'm going to start with Misty's on Thursday. I just need to figure out the best way to alter foam...probably clean it up with water and acitone, sand it a bit, paint it with acrylic, and spray it with my sealer (like the leather shoes, since these have seen some serious wear and have ingrained dirt like nobody's business). Then I have to sew Misty's accessories on...blegh, cosplay, thou'rt too time consuming.

We should definitely get together during Winter Break though, if only to chat while you sew and I paint shoes XD I swear, what is it with this particular costume season and shoes?!
